A rather stark, disturbing portrayal of religious oppression. It plays no favourites, with symbols and nightmarish representatives of most major religions.

It combines the hellish palette of Francis Bacon with the imagery of Michelangelo's Last Judgement and the acidic sarcasm of Otto Dix. It brings to mind any number of middle-ages depictions of Hell or Judgement Day, but the twisted, stylized figures are much more in-line with modern-day spiritual torment.

It is unclear if the representatives of the religions at the top of the piece are intended to represent the religion's villains or the institutions themselves. The figures to the right and left are demonic in appearance, but the creature in the center looks like a zombie bishop or pope. The chained people are clearly suffering at their hand, and the smaller, "lesser" victims, including the ghoulish "pieta" in the lower left, seem to be recipients of trickle-down torture and spiritual (rather than physical) agony.

Is that Chthulhu just below-right of center?
